11 amazing things to do in Nice France

Aah Nice! One of the jewels of the French Riviera (Cote d’Azur). This gorgeous city is a piece of paradise with both the charm of old Europe and the backdrop of the magnificent Mediterranean. It is perfect for a holiday all on its own yet minutes away from other amazing destinations, should you choose to explore further. Whether you are here for a day or several, this list of things to do can fit into any itinerary. Either way, with this picture-perfect destination, you can’t go wrong!

You can fly directly into Nice Cote d’Azur airport. It is also easily accessible by train from Paris or other European locations. It is roughly 6 hours from Paris by train. You can travel to Nice by cruise ship through the nearby port town of Villefranche.

1. Promenade Des Anglais

This beautiful promenade extends 4 miles along the Mediterranean, beginning at the airport and making its way to Old Town. It dates back to the mid-18th century when English Aristocracy began spending their winters in Nice to enjoy the mild climate and panoramic views of the coast. Today, it continues to be popular with locals and tourists alike.

2. Get lost in Old Town (Vieux Nice)

Get lost in the maze of streets and alleyways of Old Town. Discover shops selling soaps, provencal textiles, olive oil, lavender, bakeries, and outdoor cafés and restaurants. There is so much character, with cobblestone streets and pastel-hued buildings, and amazing treasures around every corner. Watch the everyday life of locals unfold above while laundry is being hung out to dry, children excitedly running home from school, and locals heading to the market and bakeries to prepare their daily meals.

3. Take in the panoramic views from Castle Hill

The breathtaking views from Castle Hill can not be matched! Though there is not an actual castle, you will find cathedral ruins and a man-made waterfall (built in the 19th century) and impressive 360-degree views! It’s easy to spend a good chunk of time here just marveling at the scenery. There are two ways to get to Castle Hill – a lift or a staircase, both located on the promenade.

4. The Place Masséna

The Place Masséna is the main historic square in Nice. The square is paved in checkerboard and surrounded by elegant red-hued buildings, making it a great place to take pictures, people-watch or go to one of the cafes surrounding the plaza. You will often find public events hosted here as-well-as street performers and entertainers.

5. Nice Cathedral

The cathedral is located in the heart of Nice’s Old Town, Place Rossetti. The beautiful landmark dates back to the 17th century. The beautiful baroque-style building is adorned with a bell tower. It is open to the public and free of charge. Inside you will find 10 chapels and a spectacular ceiling. Outside, in the square, you will find colorful outdoor cafés. While in Place Rossetti, try Fenocchio ice cream. You won’t be disappointed. They are well known for delicious ice cream and unique flavors, such as lavender, thyme, rosemary, and tomato & basil, and avocado, to name a few. I had the lavender – so good!

6. Wander the Cours Saleya Market

Wandering the Cours Selaya Market is a treat! The bustling open-air produce and flower market is open every day except Monday when it becomes an antique market. In the summer months, the market hosts arts and crafts stalls in the evenings. It is located in Vieux Nice (Old Town) where you will also be surrounded by outdoor cafés and restaurants. It’s a great place to people watch. Try socca for lunch. It is a chickpea flatbread and delicious, especially when paired with a glass of local wine!

7. Discover the neighborhood of Cimiez

If you enjoy exploring museums and history, head to Cimiez. Cimiez is an upscale neighborhood in Nice, known for its art and culture. Here you will find Cimiez Monastery and its beautiful gardens and several museums: Musée National Marc Chagall, Musée Matisse, and an archaeological museum. Cimiez is also home to Les Arénes de Cimiez park which is home to ruins of an ancient Roman city.

8. Spend some time at a beach club

Who wouldn’t want to spend some time lounging in a chair, under an umbrella, sipping cocktails and snacking on delicious French cuisine while being waited on, overlooking the French Riviera? Unfortunately, we were there in November so it was slightly too chilly but if/when I get the chance to go back to the French Riviera, this will be at the top of the list!

9. Visit St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Cathedral

The Russian Orthodox Church is off the beaten path in the suburbs but its striking beauty makes it worth a visit. The church is free to enter, though no photography is allowed and shoulders/knees must be covered. It is the largest Eastern Orthodox Cathedral in Western Europe.

10. The Nice Carnival

If you find yourself in Nice in February, the carnival is a must! It is one of the largest in the world. It is one of the most popular events in the French Riviera and attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators every year. Each year a new carnival theme is chosen and floats adorn the Promenade des Anglais both day and night for weeks.

11. Take a day trip

If you have time, Nice is the perfect base to explore the French Riviera (Cote d’Azur) and the Provence region. The most convenient and closest town is Villefranche-sur-mer. This charming fishing village is less than 15 minutes away by train. The town is small and walkable. It’s the perfect place to have a relaxing lunch seaside.

Some other fabulous world-class destinations that are 30 minutes away or less by train, include Monaco, Eze, Cannes, and Antibes!
